Many people in South East Asia keep fast during Navratri or Ramadan. However, It is extremely dangerous for people suffering from diabetes to keep fast.

Fasting amongst diabetic patient is associate with many risks, including Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose), Hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose), dehydration, diabetic ketoacidosis and thrombosis (blood clots). These conditions could be fatal as well. Therefore, it is strongly advised not to keep a fast.

However, if you must, because of unavoidable reasons, it is recommended to check your blood glucose levels more frequently and watchout for signs of low sugar. Immediately break the fast if the your sugar goes above/below the recommended range. Further, Healthly balanced diet is recommended for the whole day. I suggest to consider taking small meals (high fibre fruits) and keep yourself fully hydrated throughout the day. Avoid eating high calorie food when you break the fast in the evening.

Even though diabetes is a very unfortunate disease, that does not mean you will have to put your entire life on hold for it. If you take the right steps at the right time, watch for warning signs, keep taking your medicine regularly and listen to your doctor’s advice, you maybe able to fast safely.
